Finding Milo

By Linda Mann

I’ve always had a love for animals, especially dogs.

I felt bad hearing that the local shelters were over-saturated with animals.  When I heard that Jeff Gorell, who’s in the Assembly and now running for Congress, would pay all the fees for the first 100 animals adopted out of the Camarillo Animal Shelter, I asked my husband if we could adopt one.  After all, he promised me that someday I could have a dog, and we just purchased our first house together last year.

Alan said, yes.  Last Saturday we went to the Camarillo Animal Shelter and looked around.  Doing what I always seem to do when I go to an animal shelter, I went around to all the cages and pretended to release every animal imprisoned inside.  Then when I looked into one particular cage, and saw that one dog I knew we could care for.  That was it.

I said to Alan, “He looks like the dog from ‘The Mask,’ with Jim Carrey.”

We waited in line and told them that we wanted him.

He still needed to be fixed and we would have to wait a whole week to pick him up.   We went home empty handed that day.

As soon as we got home, I went online and looked up the dog’s name from that Jim Carrey movie.  It was Milo.  I asked Alan what he thought about the name for our new dog and after a week, it kind of grew on him.

I got a phone call from the shelter, stating that our dog had kennel cough and had to be put on medication.  But that wouldn’t stop us from taking him, just postpone his surgery.  We were asked to bring him back in November to be neutered.

Alan said that: “the volunteers at the shelter really perform a mitzvah and the community really needs to know that”  I agree!

So we finally got to leave the shelter with our latest family member, Milo, and a warm feeling that we were rescuing and providing a good home to an animal.
