On March 9th at 12:01 AM the Ventura County Fire Communication Center received multiple reports of a vegetation fire in the area of River Haven. A fire response was dispatched to the area and the first fire resource on scene reported a 100’x100’ spot fire in heavy vegetation approximately 600’ east of Harbor Blvd. Fire resources gained access to the remote area and initiated a quick and aggressive fire attack, which kept the fire to the area of origin. Fire resources remained on scene for approximately 2 hours to complete firefighting operations and perform a fire cause investigation. Upon further investigation, the cause was determined to be a warming fire that extended into the heavy vegetation surrounding a homeless encampment. Additional operational support was requested from the Ventura Police Department who assisted with public safety and security.
No public safety personnel or civilian injuries were reported during this incident and personal property loss was kept to the area of the homeless encampment.
The Ventura City Fire Department would like to remind the public to use a safe and approved heating device to prevent dangerous fires.
