Early this morning at approximately 2:30 AM.a fire broke out in a drainage ditch/arroyo on the Staben Ranch off Balcom Canyon Road in Somis. Mr. Staben woke up to find embers raining down on his lawn.

It consumed five acres before being knocked down by the quick response of Ventura County Fire Personnel. A helicopter, two hand crews and 13 engines were deployed.

Santa Ana winds were not blowing at the time.

Balcom Canyon Road has been closed during the mop up.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Statement from Tom Staben:

“Last night we had a fire at the ranch about 2:30 am. By the time I got out the door the sky was lit up and huge burning embers were falling everywhere. The lawn was glowing with these embers. I drove down to the orchard and CHP and 4 or 5 firetrucks were already onsite. These guys are unbelievable. Within 10 minutes we had 13 engines, two big hand crews and a helicopter doing water drops at 3:00 am. I rode around with the chief showing him all the access points and ranch roads. While riding with him he was on at least 4 or 5 different channels and radios communicating with engines, fire crews and overhead helicopter. While all this was going on he was scheduling crews for the next day with others on the radios to make sure that there would be others on duty to cover other fires that might start up. These guys are organized and on it! I was getting dizzy watching him go from one mic to another. His suburban was like a mobile command post on wheels. Thank you Ventura County Fire Department and Cal Fire personnel for putting out this fire so quickly. These guys come out in the dark not knowing the terrain and just figure it out immediately!👍👍👍👍👍👍
