First MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aerial Vehicle arrives at NBVC Point Mugu
Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) today received the first MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aerial Vehicle assigned to Unmanned Patrol Squadron One Nine (VUP-19) Detachment Point Mugu known as “Big Red.”
The U.S. Coast Guard at Forward Operating Base Point Mugu provided air-to-air support from their HH-65 Dolphin to document the arrival of the first MQ-4C at Point Mugu.
MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
The MQ-4C Triton took off this morning from Palmdale, Airport and was remotely controlled by VUP-19 at NAS Jacksonville, Fla. The MQ-4C underwent in-flight checks before landing at NBVC Point Mugu.
VUP-19 DET Point Mugu will provide maintenance functions for the MQ-4C and is expected to eventually provide MQ-4Cs to operate in the Pacific.
This aircraft system delivers to the Navy a 24-hour, unblinking “eye in the sky” in a maritime environment. Triton’s cutting edge sensor technology identifies and tracks ships from 55,000 feet. It then sends collected data to the naval fleet in near real-time.
Navy commanders are provided a big picture view theater of operations as Maritime surveillance, and the Triton, become increasingly important.
