Flags on the Fourth

The Fourth of July, to too many Americans is just a day for picnics, outings, hot dogs, hamburgers and fireworks. Better yet, it is a three day weekend. And to too many Americans its true significance is forgotten or never really known.

A quick browse on YouTube yields “man-on-the street” video surveys asking people questions about the historical aspects of this day and of the flag. The answers indicate that some people just don’t know the do not understand the Fourth of July or its history.

Today members of Oxnard Elks Lodge 1443 were at Oxnard’s Plaza Park at 7:00 AM to place 56 American flags around the Plaza and its Viet Nam Veteran’s’ Memorial. Joining them were two members of the Ventura Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse who are also members of the Elks Lodge.

One of the requirements of being an Elk is American Citizenship as well as a commitment to American values. The Elks welcome new members who will continue the charitable works of the Organization and awareness of American ideals. Their motto is “Elks Care, Elks Share”.
