Former Senator Strickland’s CA Trump Super PAC off to a fast start

By George Miller

A new California Trump-leaning Super PAC The Committee for American Sovereignty, is off to a good start, with nearly $2 million reportedly pledged in the first four days. We are told that it might raise $20 million. The well-known and well-connected former State Senator Tony Strickland, of Moorpark, is the Chair. He knows many key political players and potential donors. He told us last week that he had been supporting the Trump cause for month and said that choosing Trump was a very easy decision.

Strickland was the (Republican) Senate Minority leader until termed out. He failed at a bid for the Congressional District 26 seat vacated by Elton Gallegly, but won by Santa Monica State Senator Julia Brownley. CD-26 was redistricted in 2010 to include most of heavily Democratic Oxnard and exclude some of the most Conservative parts of Simi Valley. It has been in Democrat hands since the 2012 election, when redistricting went into effect.

Having much actual experience, he currently teaches public policy at USC and does political consulting work.

Trump touted the fact that he wasn’t going after large special interest campaign donations, but did not rule out Super Pacs which might work to his advantage. Now that the highly competitive election is shaping up to possibly require up to 1.5 billion dollars to prevail, this might be advisable.

Here is their press release originally sent out to announce the formation of the Super PAC:

Plans to Counter June Negative TV attack on GOP Nominee

The formation of a new National Super PAC in support of the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for president was announced today in New York and Los Angeles.

The Committee for American Sovereignty expects to raise $20 million before the Republican National Convention convenes in July, and much more following the convention, to fund voter registration programs, strategic get-out-the-vote operations, and targeted broadcast and online media buys. The committee named Doug Watts as National Executive Director and spokesman and announced former State Senator Tony Strickland as the California Chairman.

“With the recent announcement that a pro-Hillary Clinton’s Super PAC has already booked over $90 million in ad time in just seven states in June, it is clear we need to ramp up major donor fundraising efforts, unify Republicans, and take on the Clinton machine. We have already begun to raise significant funds in California and from supporters across the country,” said spokesman Watts, adding that the committee will not accept special interest PAC contributions.

“We intend to raise significant funds from California supporters who, until now, have deferred to Mr. Trump’s wishes to self-fund his campaign. We believe it is imperative that Mr. Trump’s message be communicated directly to voters and that we challenge head-on the vicious smears propagated by Priorities USA, Hillary Clinton’s attack-dog Super PAC,” said Mr. Strickland.

The advisory committee to the Committee for American Sovereignty is a cross-section of American patriots, Republican and conservative activists, and friends and business associates of Donald J. Trump.  A partial list is attached.
