Garcia Makes Donation of Salary to Blue Star Ranch

Newhall, CA – Congressman Mike Garcia (R, CA-25) today presented a personal monthly salary donation to the Blue Star Ranch, a Newhall mental health non-profit that works with veterans who suffer from PTSD and their families through equine-assisted therapy.

“Our veterans and their families make incredible sacrifices for our nation. For many, it doesn’t end when they return home. Too many of our heroes suffer from wounds we can’t see, and we must do everything we can to make sure they get the help they need and deserve,” said Congressman Garcia. “Equine therapy offers an opportunity for many veterans to overcome some of the barriers to treatment, and I am proud to support the Blue Star Ranch and the important work they are doing for folks who have given so much.”

The donation, Garcia’s last of 2020, follows his November contribution to the Sheriff’s Department Youth Activities League, a Val Verde after-school program that provides food, tutoring, counseling and mentorship for local students.

“All of our fundraisers have been cancelled due to COVID, and the grant system is very tight right now, so we’ve been reinventing the wheel when it comes to fundraising,” said Blue Star Ranch Executive Director Nancy Zhe. “The Congressman’s donation is very important to be able to keep our ranch going to serve our veterans with PTSD and their families. This donation will help us take care of the animals and the ranch and make sure we get through to next year so we can continue our work.”

In his seven months in office, Garcia has personally contributed to a number of local organizations, including non-profits supporting local law enforcement officers, the SCV Food Pantry and Circle of Hope, a charity that works with Santa Clarita residents battling cancer. With the 25th district in the midst of another round of shutdowns, Garcia will continue to fulfill his June pledge to donate the equivalent of 10% of his salary to local charitable organizations.

Mike Garcia believes in a strong national defense and is a pro-business, pro-taxpayer, political outsider with nearly 20 years of service to this country as one of the first Super Hornet strike fighter pilots in the Navy and is a highly decorated US Naval Officer.  Garcia is a first-generation American whose father immigrated to the US in 1959 and has lived in the 25th district for nearly all of his life.  Garcia lives in Santa Clarita with his wife and two sons. He was elected to Congress on May 12, 2020, winning a Special Election with 55% and becoming the first California Republican to flip a Democrat seat since 1998.

The 25th district encompasses the cities of Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster and the northern part of the San Fernando Valley.  The median income is $76,866 and the ethnic breakdown is 45.8% White, 8% Black, 7.7% Asian and 35.3% Hispanic.
