Gas Tax Increase Despite Budget Surplus

EditorialRecently, California has been enjoying benefits of low gas prices at the pump. Unfortunately, this positive climate won’t last too much longer if left to California officials like Governor Jerry Brown or Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins. For weeks now, the California legislature has been debating whether to limit the gains of low prices at the pump by raising taxes on gasoline, despite the state already having some of the highest gas taxes in the nation. This isn’t fair to consumers and most of all, middle and lower-class families who benefit the most from affordable gas.

“Budget surplus?” Are you jesting? A recent CJ article said there was a $10 billion cash DEFICIT. In addition, unfunded pension liabilities are hundreds of billions of dollars and continue to grow. There are also the matters of the $100+ billion train to nowhere commitment, huge future expenses for water systems and enormous costs related to illegal immigrants and MediCal.

Finally, there are potentially serious financial sysem irregularities and spending continues to griow, even as rich people and industry leave California, while the middle class is “transformed” into the lower class.
