Gavin Newsom Seeks Millions For Migrants As Homeless Americans Suffer

California Governor Gavin Newson plans on meeting with San Diego leaders and state legislators today as he seeks to house and assist migrants in the San Diego area.

According to the Union Tribune, Newsom plans to meet with Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, San Diego County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox, City Councilmember Chris Ward, and Jewish Family Service and ACLU of San Diego.

The governor is seeking to expend $25 million in the state budget for nonprofits as well as state services for migrants, many of whom arrive via “caravans.”

“At a time when federal lawmakers are seeking to secure the border, it is outrageous that the California governor is working to facilitate border crossers,” Robin Hvdiston, Executive Director of We The People Rising and CA State Coordinator for The Remembrance Project, said. “Spending millions of taxpayers’ dollars  will act as a magnet to attract border crossers to California. This is wrong at a time when homelessness is on the rise in San Diego and throughout the state. Newsom and the San Diego leaders should be meeting today and working to fund and end the American citizen homeless epidemic. Instead, they are facilitating foreign nationals to relocate to California, and these same foreign nationals will be competing with vulnerable and needy American citizens for tax dollars and services.”

The governor would fund San Diego Rapid Response and other nonprofit organizations that assist migrants and asylum seekers.

“It is unconscionable that Newsom wants to bring in border crossers when homeless American families are suffering throughout this state. The Department of Homeland Security has published statistics that state more than 80 percent of so called asylum seekers are not legitimate cases; however, Central American border crossers are allowed to remain on U.S. soil until their cases are heard in court. More than 90 percent do not show up for their court dates and, thereby, take up illegal residency,” Hvidston said. “Our elected officials should be meeting and expending tax dollars on helping American citizens. California has the highest poverty rate in the nation and that issue should be addressed and solved before facilitating  foreign nationals to settle in California.”
