What do you get when you mix craft classes, live music, Paninis and pizza with wine tasting? You get an experience unlike any other west of the Mississippi. And if you’re looking for all of the above and much more, right here in Ventura, the one place you must go is WEST, Gone West Cellars to be exact.

Debbie and Larry Jenkins

When owners Debbie and Larry Jenkins opened Gone West Cellars in November of 2012, the one goal that Debbie insisted on was that their wine bar was going to be different from all the other tasting rooms in Ventura County.

“I’ve been working in the wine industry for 15 years,” Debbie said. “I also worked at several wineries and owned a wine bar in Lompoc, so when I decided to open here in Ventura, I took the best of what I liked and left out what I didn’t. Instead of standing during a wine tasting,  we have stools at the wine tasting counter, and communal tables so you can sit and enjoy yourselves and taste the wines.”

With over 80 different labels from a variety of California wineries, guests rely on Debbie’s vast experience and knowledge to help them choose the perfect wine for any occasion. Gone West also bottles and sells their own label giving them the opportunity to offer guests an impressive wine list that’s constantly changing.

“I change out the wine tasting flights every week,” Debbie pointed out,  “You will always have a choice of four reds and four whites, but they’ll all be different, so you could visit us once a week for six months and never sample the same wine twice.”

Debbie selects specialty wines only found in small production wineries. She even invites the wine makers for paring dinner events at Gone West. “This summer Peter Scott of Scott Cellars in Lompoc will probably do our first wine maker dinner this summer, because everyone knows Peter! We recently added Treatch Cellars and are planning on inviting Chuck Treatch to hold the second wine maker dinner event.”

You won’t have to wait till summer to enjoy wonderful eats at Gone West. Their food menu consists of Panini sandwiches, salads, cheese plates. In a few months, they’re planning on installing their own pizza oven to add another popular item to the menu.

With emphasis on good food and great fun, Gone West has live music every Friday night. Like their wine tasting flights, the four different groups rotate every week. One week you’ll be dancing to Rock & Roll, the next you might be listening to Country, or even an electric ukulele band. If you can’t make it in on Friday, they’ll be adding a guitarist on Saturdays.

There’s plenty to do during the week as well. Every two weeks, Debbie conducts craft classes in everything from painting, to music, to ceramics.

“We do a “Paint and Sip” once a month,” Debbie said. “We have around 25 ladies who come in, drink wine and leave with a beautiful canvas they painted themselves. We like to constantly be doing something different. I just don’t want people to get bored.”

With all that’s going on at Gone West Cellars, being bored is the one thing you will NOT be!
