According to the Press Telegram, California will become the largest state in the nation to provide health care to all children, regardless of their immigration status, under a new law signed Friday by Governor Jerry Brown.  State Senator Ricardo Lara is the author of the legislation SB 4.

“It is unfortunate for the citizens of California that Governor Brown has chosen to squander tax dollars on those illegally in our state, when our own citizens are in need of  medical assistance. Studies have shown that SB 4 will consume billions of tax dollars,” Robin Hvidston, Executive Director for We The People Rising and California Director for The Remembrance Project, said. “There are more than 400,000 foster care children in the USA – and they should be the focus of  our elected officials. California’s homeless families should be entitled to these tax dollars – not those in this state illegally.  This is a gross and shameful mismanagement, on the part of Sacramento legislators and the governor to enact this legislation.  Veterans and unemployed citizens should  take precedence.”

Citizens statewide have been contacting Governor Brown, calling for him to veto SB 4.

Hvidston and members of her organizations We The People Rising, Maria Espinoza of The Remembrance Project and members of America First Latinos testified in Sacramento in opposition to the Health For All legislation during the hearing phase of the bill and lobbied state legislators to oppose the bill both in Sacramento and at the district office level.  We The People Rising was listed as official opposition in the text of the legislation.

“Medi-Cal is currently underfunded in this state,” Hvidston said. “This legislation is going to exacerbate a dire budget issue to an unprecedented new level.”

Hvidston stated that in addition to legislation that expends tax dollars that should benefit citizens, the legislation will act as a magnet.

“SB 4 sends the message to the world that you can enter and reside illegally in California and the state will provide free health care,” Hvidston said. “In addition, this poorly written legislation ignores the fact that there is a shortage of physicians in California. There is not enough money and not enough physicians to sustain Health For All, for the world in California – yet Senator Ricardo Lara and Governor Brown recklessly plowed ahead  with this budget breaking bill.”

The Press Telegram reported that Senator Ricardo Lara’s SB 4  is the first in a series of proposed legislation including Senate Bill 10, which will advance next year and includes a provision to cover adults through a capped enrollment program. It also requests a federal waiver so  those illegally present in California can purchase health care through Covered California.

“Our organization will continue to fight future legislation that is harmful to the citizens of the state,” Hvidston said. “We will call for the legislators in Sacrament to represent the lawful constituents of the state or risk being voted out of office.”
