SACRAMENTO, CA — After three years of historic wildfires, there is the expectation that California will have 60 percent more fires in the 2020 fire season.
Today, Governor Newsom recognized both the risks and challenges and has earmarked $85.7 million for CAL FIRE to improve surge capacity and “mitigate the ferocity of these fires.” The funds will be used for the hiring of 600 critical personnel.
“The firefighters who have worked dangerously long shifts—sometimes weeks blending into months—appreciate the Governor’s foresight in bringing the number of firefighters available to an appropriate level,” said Tim Edwards, President of CAL FIRE Local 2881.
CAL FIRE Local 2881 continues to be dedicated to doing more with the resources available and being constantly prepared for the inevitable disasters confronting California.
The Governor and the Legislature are working together to fashion a budget that will protect the people and resources of California during these profoundly difficult times.
“We anticipate a difficult fire season that can best be managed by being prepared for the emergency calls we know will come,” said Edwards.
