Greg Nyhoff sworn in as new Oxnard City Manager

By George Miller

Oxnard finally has its new City Manager, after two years and a long executive search, winnowing down 50 candidates to 6, then two and finally one. Mr Nyhoff actually started officially early this month and attended his first City Council meeting on June 3.  So far, he shows every sign of being an outstanding chief executive of our $358 million dollar budget city organization in a diverse city of at least 200,000 souls.  Mr. Nyhoff is already heavily engaged and got a running start via extensive talks with stakeholders and even watching endless meetings on TV.

He inherited a difficult situation and must deal with enormous deferred maintenance and expansion/upgrade plans for public works, many vacant staff positions, money-losing “enterprise” projects, staffing problems, a burgeoning crime situation, not to mention the after-effects of scandals in recent years.

He joins the city after a tumultuous period when the previous City Manager and Public Works Director were forced out due to various scandals.  Assistant City Manager Karen Burnham kept things running as Interim City Manager for two years and had to cope with severe cutbacks, loss of credibility of staff, investigations, etc- thanks Ms. Burnham.

According to things we have read, the City of Modesto, where he was formerly City Manager feels that it lost a very good man. Even a strong opponents of hiring him, Councilman Bert Perello, is pleased at what he sees so far.  Time will tell- but off to a blazing start!
