Griffin: Ooopps! Did I Go Too Far?

By Phil Erwin

Imagine the shock: You wake from a restful four hours’ sleep to discover that you’ve been beheaded. The proof is a professional-quality photo bouncing around the Internet, with a bemused-looking comedienne holding your bloody countenance up for scrutiny.

Well… President Trump didn’t actually awaken to this grisly surprise. A night-owl like myself, he was tweeting about it while most of the country was drifting in blissful slumber, completely unaware that their Commander-in-Chief was apparently bereft of his head.

Or that a dubious “celebrity” had proven herself bereft of what little comedic sensibility she may have once had.

For those of you who saw the picture, but didn’t recognize the woman in question: Kathy Griffin is a somewhat-known Hollywood figure, a stand-up comic who pops up occasionally on television and has done a slew of comedy specials. Her “humor” combines the rough-edged insults of the late Don Rickles with the unrelenting gutter-mouth of Andrew Dice Clay. Think Comedy Channel “Roast” with only one Insulter/Presenter. Griffin can be clever and edgy, but after a while her lady-has-a-stevedore-mouth approach wears incredibly thin, and it dawns on you that much of her humor would be considered racist, sexist, homophobic and/or misogynistic if it were delivered by a Conservative comic.

Not that any Conservative would be caught uttering the garbage that is Griffin’s stock-in-trade.

But nothing coming out of Griffin’s mouth is as unacceptably obscene as that picture – a fact of which Griffin was clearly aware, given that she’s seen on video lamenting to her photographer that “We’re gonna have to move to Mexico when this comes out.”

The backlash was swift, and deservedly harsh. Soon Griffin was posting a supposedly heartfelt apology, in which she admits to having “crossed the line” and offended people.

Oh, really? Ya think?

Griffin’s “apology” was not triggered by recognition that she had offended people. She meant to do that. The apology was triggered by her realizing that nobody found it funny.

In today’s extraordinarily permissive atmosphere, the only crime in comedy is to not be funny.

Of course, Griffin’s apology is meant for the “audience” – the public — not a word of regret to the President or his family.

Just imagine if you were Melania waking up to that photo.

Imagine if you were her young son, Barron.

Imagine if you were Melania, and Barron had awakened you with that photo.

Why couldn’t Griffin imagine those things in advance? Why did her sense of humanity not override her comic “judgment”?

One could opine that the broad cultural decline has so coarsened our society that there few rules left governing “civility.” That is true, and lamentable.

But the answer in this case is much simpler than that: Because Donald Trump is a hated Republican. Therefore, he is Fair Game to all Liberals/Progressives. No rules apply. No offense is too great.

The Secret Service may have something to say about that. The photo could easily be considered a “Call to Arms” – a recommendation for action. Let’s ISIS the bastard right outta the White House!

That kind of incendiary talk is so illegal – so fundamentally treasonous – I may wind up on some government watch list just for having made the oblique suggestion as to what might have been in someone else’s mind.

But here’s the thing: If we had a Democrat in the White House and a Conservative comic were posting such incendiary photos, the comic, the photographer, the Web site publisher and everyone Twittering a yuck-yuck response would find themselves in jail within the day, awaiting summary execution, or at least a lifetime in Leavenworth. The Left will brook no insults of their own.

But a vulgar, inhuman insult directed toward a Republican President? Wonderful! Creative! Edgy! Wish I’d thought of it! (Of course, they won’t admit these things in print, ’cause it’s already gone bad for Griffin. But you just know that’s what they’re all thinking, and what the watercooler conversation will sound like.)

What I want the Left to answer for is this: The Liberal Press and all Democrats have publicly insisted for an entire decade that the prison at Guantanamo Bay was the most effective recruiting tool in the ISIS toolkit. This was an extremely important campaign point for then-Senator Obama, who promised repeatedly to close the prison specifically because of this alleged (but never-proven!) recruitment value.

This assertion, a universally accepted “truth” among Democrats, has been completely debunked by experts in the national security realm who routinely monitor the Web sites and writings of terrorist organizations such as ISIS. They all say that the Arabic postings virtually never mention Guantanamo.

So, tell me all you Liberal/Progressives: Which is a more effective recruitment tool, a prison that ISIS never mentions in their on-line conversations, or a photograph of a red-headed witch holding up a bloody head of President Trump?

Isn’t that picture the very essence of a call-to-action?

Tell me this, Ms. Griffin: What makes you think your Hollywood fake-photo won’t be used to recruit young terrorists?

And when it happens, how’re you gonna make a joke out of that?

Editor’s Note: We found the image of Ms. Griffin with an effigy of President Trump’s bloodied head too distasteful to display with this column. Truthfully, it was hard enough having to display her image at all.

Like Hillary, she’s in search of finding who victimized her when she was the perp.

AND, after all this, she thinks she’s the one offended.
