Grounded trawler “Day Island” in danger of breaking up?

A large fishing trawler “Day Island” ran aground off Ventura, just south of the Buenaventura State Beach last night, near Woodstock Lane. Three crew members were rescued (see Fire Dept. report link, at bottom of this article).
UPDATE: We were told that a tug is to remove the Day City at 9:30 tonight.
We haven’t heard the cause yet, but it is common for boats to be left on GPS (Global Positioning) courses and run aground. Losing power near the shore is another common cause of such incidents,

Pam Schlotter, one of our Oxnard correspondents. went up to check it out today and took the photos you see here. She said that some local fishermen told her that the craft could break up on the surfbound beach by tomorrow when the waves are expected to be big, unless she could be salvaged first. We contacted the Coast Guard and Ventura Fire Dept. for further information and are awaiting responses.
