Happenings at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum 2018 May-September


EXHIBIT: Ron L Clarke Exhibit (May 7 – June 24) This exhibit spans the lifeline of the age of sailing and the development in western civilization from the 5th Dynasty to the late 1900’s. Over 30 scale-models tell the story.

A.I.R.: Artist in Residence (May 3 – May 31) Begun in 2017, our Artist in Residence program brings artists and audiences together. In May and October, CIMM invites an artist (or artists) to the museum for extended periods of time to explore their practice, meet new people, use new materials, and experience life in a new location. The results are often provocative and wide-ranging.

May 16 SPEAKER: Creating Wooden Walls: The Navy that united America by Jim Kosinski & Jerry Leckie. This talk will be about the unexpected and transformative effect the building and launching of the first ships of the U.S. Navy had on our country, its spirit, its politics and its economy.

June 17 EVENT:  Woodenboat Show, From Tree to the Sea: CIMM will host From the Tree to the Sea: the 3rd Annual Father’s Day Wooden Boat Show – an event of the most enjoyable and rustic variety! It will feature a series of classic wooden boats on display for everyone to enjoy from 12 pm to 4 pm. Stunning wooden boats will grace the dock behind CIMM. A selection of classic cars will also be on display. Participate in fun and engaging maritime activities!

EXHIBIT: Nautica (July 1 – Aug 26) Local artists display juried
artworks of all things “sea”.

July 12 EVENT: Nautica Reception 6-8pm

July 18 SPEAKER: New Insights into Status & Threats to Blue and Humpback Whales by John Calambokidis    

July 22 EVENT: Chowderfest:  Join CIMM for the event of the Ventura County Summer: Chowderfest 2018! Selected local restaurants will compete for title of “Ventura County’s Best Chowder” at the 4th annual Chowderfest on Sunday, July 22, 2018, 2-6pm.

EXHIBIT: Tattoos and Tenacious Women (Sept 2 – Dec 30) Explore the rich and surprising history of women and tattoos in California at History San José’s newest exhibit, Tattooed & Tenacious: Inked Women in California History. The exhibit will open to the public Sunday, September 2, 2018; 12:00pm – 4:00pm at the CIMM.

September 6 EVENT: Tattoos Exhibition Opening Reception 6-8pm     

September 20 SPEAKER: Saving History! By DAVID-BRYDEN PEASE, Retired Director of Natural & Cultural Training for DOD (Dept. of Defense), Civil Engineer Officers Corps School; Retired Army Reserve Major
