A New Start
Casa Pacifica’s Short Term Adolescent Residential Treatment (START) program opened in November 2015. Even weeks before the official opening, one client’s family was anxiously waiting for their chance at a new start.
Gabby had been through multiple intensive outpatient programs and was on her fourth 5150 (involuntary psychiatric hold) when her mom Erika, heard about Casa Pacifica’s new START program. “At that point, we were desperate. Gabby was very rebellious and resentful. Everything we did seemed to escalate her,” commented Erika, thinking back on that difficult time. While waiting for her chance in the START program, Gabby had to be pulled from school and watched 24-hours a day.Gabby was finally admitted to Casa Pacifica’s START program as the first and only client for the first few weeks. “I think the one-on-one time she got the first few weeks was great. It was something she needed,” said Erika. “But nothing is perfect. The first weekend I came to visit Gabby, she refused to see me. That was devastating, but we were committed to the program and making it work. The services that make up the START program – individual, family, and group therapy, psychiatric services, and structured routine – really helped Gabby build some self-worth again.”After a few months, Gabby successfully transitioned to the partial hospitalization program on campus and was able to stay with Erika at a house she had rented to be closer to her daughter. The process wasn’t without its setbacks, Gabby reentered residential treatment a few times and then earned the privilege to come home again. “As a package, the START program really helped her get back on track. We were powerless as parents and ran out of tools to help her. The START program gave us both a break and gave her a chance to learn how to work through what she need to work through.”Erika is happy to report that Gabby is doing well in school and involved with sports. “Things aren’t perfect, she’s still a teenager,” Erika joked, “but she is 1000% better than when she went into the program. I finally got my daughter back.”
