Hillary Clinton spoke in Oxnard today

Goes on the attack against Trump while pleading case for Hillary 2016

By George Miller

In a speech marked by blistering attacks on likely Republican opponent Donald Trump, nothing negative was said about Bernie Sanders by Democrat primary leader Hillary Clinton. She spoke for a half hour at Hueneme High in Oxnard today. She did this without notes and it looked as if she didn’t use a teleprompter. 26th CD Representative Julia Brownley did the introduction and plugged “immigration reform.”

It is no accident that Clinton spoke in this Latino-heavy area today to Get Out The Vote, just as Bill Clinton came here in 2014 to help boost Julia Brownley’s own tight re-election campaign against Jeff Gorell in 2014.

The event took place in the rather small high school gym, which would not accommodate all those who showed up. Reportedly, loudspeakers were installed so the overflow crowd could hear Clinton’s speech. But the crowd was nothing like the recent Bernie Sanders rally at Ventura College or almost any Donald Trump event.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have each been doing four events daily in a mad rush to stay ahead of Sanders in California, since it became apparent that he was closing the gap with her before next Tuesday’s primary election.

Clinton’s speech was divided into two main areas: a heavy assault on Trump and a case why she thinks she should be President, interspersed with patriotic and feelgood memes. She started right off attacking The Donald on a host of things, such as:

  • Bush and Clinton differed on policies, but came with the same “awe and respect” for the office, understood the seriousness and responsibility of the office, that everything you say matters, which she claims Trump does not do.
  • She asked if the candidates can actually get things done, things that produce positive results. She evidently thinks that a guy who built a ten billion dollar international real estate and business empire consisting of about 500 business units, dealing with hundreds of governments and business entities, cannot.
  • She asked if the candidates can unify and protect this country and says Trump fails that test.
  • We need more good jobs and rising income for people, rebuild infrastructure, bring back jobs to the US and create more advanced manufacturing jobs. She said Donald Trump has no plan to do that, which he disputes.
  • Combat “Climate Change” and create clean energy jobs. She says Trump doesn’t believe man-made climate change is occurring and (not surprisingly) has no plan to address it, which is true. Clinton said under her presidency, a half billion solar panels would be installed and clean energy could power every home in America.
  • Donald Trump only plans to cut taxes for billionaires (which is untrue).
  • Claiming he attacked our closest ally and praised dictators.
  • Wants to pull out of a major defense alliance- NATO. (What he actually said is that it is obsolete as configured and that other members should assume more of the burden).
  • Saying Trump thinks he knows more about foreign policy than the generals. (However, Trump said he would rely on advice from the military).
  • Saying he doesn’t care if Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia acquire nuclear arms.
  • Claiming he wants to return to torture and kill terrorist families, against international law and the honor of our fighting men and women (which all recent Presidents have done).
  • Everything Trump does is an attack on someone: Mexican immigrants, women, McCain, the disabled…. (actually he attacked ILLEGAL immigration, certain women, one guy who happened to be disabled and yes, McCain).
  • Saying Trump U was not really a school, not accredited, a scam and that Trump attacked the judge on the case for being a “Mexican.” (Actually he pointed out that it might be a conflict of interest for the judge, who he said was an “anchor baby” and a La Raza [“The Race”] member. Eric Trump recently pointed out that Trump U had a 98% top rating and has many thankful letters and videos from students, has a better student rating than Harvard).

Why another Clinton should be President, according to Hillary:

  • Under Bill Clinton, 23 million jobs were created, but Bush then cut taxes “and we know what happened,” that Republicans ignored the risks and created the worst crisis since the Great Depression. (She did not at all attribute any of that to bipartisan policies, including the repeal of the Glass-Stegall Act under Clinton, The Community Reinvestment Act and Federal Reserve policies which  played no small role in that.  We’re not sure how all this is Trump’s fault, but she did attribute it to “the other party.”) She implied that Obama fixed all that.
  • She would work for a higher minimum wage and “equal pay.”
  • Balance family and work, hold down cost of child care, which is sometimes as expensive as college tuition.
  • Help people afford college, without having to borrow a penny. But she did not say who would pay for it or how.
  • Protect “a woman’s right to choose” (abortion) and Planned Parenthood.
  • Defended the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). She said “HillaryCare” (which failed) preceded that. Then, in the next breath, she lamented the astronomical increases in premiums, co-pays, deductibles… under Obamacare.
  • Address mental health/addiction.
  • She was part of a team which successfully planned the capture/killing of Osama bin Ladin.
  • Stand up against the “Gun Lobby”
  • Support “comprehensive immigration reform with a path to Citizenship” in her 1st 100 days.
  • Would rebuild respect- Democracy is based on respect.
  • Support voting rights.
  • Common sense gun control. (she didn’t say what that is, but has previously spoken out against private ownership of firearms).
  • Appoint Supreme Court judges to rule on gun control, strike down Citizens United, defend equality of marriage, LGBT, voting rights.
  • Fight for us, make life better for the hardworking folks in Oxnard.

I appreciate the local nature of Citizens Journal, and the intent to expand on what the Ventura County Star does. However, items like this need to be clearly labeled as opinion, rather than news. This is more like MSNBC or Fox. As a former newspaper reporter and writer, I’m happy to see upstart news outlets and hope they’ll become really good news outlets.

Amazing how she dismisses the little dog nipping at her heals (Bernie) but assumes she only has to deal with Donald.
