Holy Guacamole! California Avocado Festival

By Gary Jamison- Carpenteria

The Annual California Avocado festival in Carpenteria was this last weekend. This was our first adventure with this event,  scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,10/2-4.  We decided to explore it on Friday. The festival is only a few blocks long, but filled with fun things to see, hear, and taste.

The street was closed to traffic and in its place was booth after booth of avocado adventures.  We bought some avocado cooking oil, avocado chocolate truffles, and ripe avocados… then we really got into the spirit of the festival.  An Iron Butterfly tribute band began to play on the main stage  and two other bandstands  were entertaining the happy crowds..  three bands played for a couple of hours and then were replaced by another group  of bands.   70s rock and roll, hip hop, heavy metal, blues, and plain good time music entertained us as we sat and tried avocado ice cream, shrimp avocado cocktails, and guacamole with Chips.

Every food stand added guacamole to whatever dish you ordered. Welcoming stands distributed bags of recipes. Every possible size and variety of the green fruit was on display.

You might think all this guacamole would be too much. But it wasn’t.  Instead everything was yummy.  Everyone we saw was really lovin’ it. Children were all smiles.  Adults were walking in step with the music.  What a wonderful afternoon.

Sometimes the best events are free and this was definitely one of them.
