News Release
Today the Hueneme Little League kicked off its 2022 season in style. The last
time opening ceremonies took place was back in 2019 because of COVID-19. The
turnout was nothing short of amazing, and we are so excited to welcome back all
of the players, families, coaches, managers, and volunteers. Ana Bolo, President
of Port Hueneme Little League was the MC for today’s events. Representing the
City were Mayor Rollins, and City Manager Conners. Mayor Rollins addressed the
audience and said he was excited to see all the faces back at Bubbling Springs
Park, and wished everyone a great season. Mayor Rollins was also the honorary
catcher for the first pitch thrown out by Naval Construction Training Center
Commander Javier Lopez Martinez.
During the ceremony, a group of young men were called out to receive special
recognition for their recent accomplishments. A traveling baseball team composed
of youth from the league named “Hueneme Drillers” coached by Hector Ramos,
recently competed in a Western Regional tournament in Las Vegas where they
went 6-0 and beat teams from all over the western United States and brought home
the championship ring! Coach Ramos stated his players worked so hard during
this past year and were faced with big challenges brought on by COVID-19. At
one point during training, the kids had to have batting practice in a backyard as no
other options were available.
Following all the guidance and COVID-19 protocols,
the team never gave up. In fact, it motivated all the players to be the best players
they could be.
We congratulate the Hueneme Drillers and Hueneme Little League for their
dedication, hard work, and accomplishments. The City looks forward to a great
2022 Little League Season!
