Immigration Policy | One Reader’s Pragmatic Solution

Immigration policy is daily news. I offer a pragmatic solution.

1.  Exercise the legal right and fundamental obligation of every nation to secure its borders.

2.  For persons brought illegally to this country as minor children (the so-called Dreamers  and DACA Recipients ), create a permanent resident status (perhaps a Dreamers Card) with all of the rights and responsibilities of a Green Card except:
a.  No path to citizenship
b.  The status is permanent with no requirement to renew
c.  Not subject to deportation
d.  May not sponsor any other person 

3.  For persons in the country illegally that are the parents of Dreamers and/or U.S. citizens, create a permanent resident status (perhaps a Yellow Card ) with all of the rights and responsibilities of a Green Card except:
a.  No path to citizenship
b.  The status is permanent with no requirement to renew
c.  Not subject to deportation
d.  May not sponsor any other person except a spouse and minor children

4.  For persons in the country illegally not included in category #2 or #3, create a resident status (perhaps an Orange Card ) with all of the rights and responsibilities of a Green Card except:
a.  No path to citizenship
b.  May not sponsor any other person

These specific actions recognize the importance of family and the duty of the country to control immigration while not overly rewarding or punishing those who violated our immigration laws.
