Initial Monetary Restitution released to Victims in Santa Clara Waste Water Case

VENTURA, California – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the California Attorney General’s Office, released $700,000 in restitution to victims of an explosion that occurred on November 18, 2014, at the Santa Clara Waste Water Company (SCWWC) facility located in Santa Paula, California.  Eighteen SCWWC employees and first responders were injured, either by the explosion or by inhaling toxic vapors which developed on-site shortly afterwards.

These funds stem from restitution secured to date from defendants William James Mitzel and Douglas Brian Edwards who each paid $350,000 in restitution at the time of their respective pleas. The $700,000 of restitution released today represents only a partial amount of the total restitution prosecutors are seeking on behalf of the victims in this case. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and California Attorney General’s Office worked together to secure and distribute these funds.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office is the public prosecutor for the county’s 850,000 residents. The office employs approximately 280 employees including attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, and other professional support staff who strive to seek justice, ensure public safety, and protect the rights of crime victims.
