Ventura County Sheriff – – Incident Press Release
On 8/23/20, at approximately 11:30 PM, deputies at the Sheriff’s Pre-Trial Detention Facility (PTDF) discovered Brian Masterson alone and unresponsive in his cell. Deputies immediately rendered aid and summoned medical staff. Ventura City Fire and American Medical Response personnel responded to provide more advanced care and transported Mr. Masterson by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital. At about 3:52 PM on 8/25/20, Mr. Masterson was pronounced deceased.
The cause of death is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, pending autopsy results from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. As a matter of policy, the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau investigates all inmate deaths.
Mr. Masterson was an organ donor and his family hopes that through his death he may save others.
