Inmate death at the Pre-Trial Detention Center

Ventura County Sheriff Department – Incident Press Release

On 08/18/2019, at approximately 10:50 AM, deputies at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility discovered that 53 year old Oxnard resident, Robert Bustamante was unresponsive in his cell. Deputies immediately began to render aid and summoned jail medical staff. Ventura City Fire and American Medical Response personnel also responded to provide more advanced care. Ultimately, Mr. Bustamante was pronounced deceased at 11:21 AM.

The cause of death is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, pending autopsy results from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. As a matter of policy, the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau investigates the causes of all inmate deaths.
