Jack O’Connell, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Endorses Carla Castilla in the 3rd District

CandidatesCornerJack O’Connell, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, announced his support of Carla Castilla to succeed retiring 3rd District Supervisor Kathy Long. The Castilla campaign has built a diverse coalition of Teachers, Nurses, Firefighters, Law Enforcement, Ventura County leaders, Small Business owners, along with environmental and community activists.

“Carla Castilla has demonstrated a strong record of working to support California’s public education system,” said Jack O’Connell, Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Carla has helped improve academic standards in our public schools, put more students on the path to college, and fights for every child to have the opportunity to attain a quality education that prepares them for good-paying jobs in our current and future workforce. I am proud to endorse Carla Castilla for 3rd District Supervisor.”

Jack O’Connell previously served in the California State Senate representing the 18th District from 1994 to 2002. He also served in the California State Assembly representing the Central Coast-based 35th District from 1982 to 1994. Before his election to the Legislature, O’Connell served on the Santa Barbara County School Board.

O’Connell is also the former 26th California State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2002 to 2010.

Carla Castilla currently serves as the District Director for State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson. She previously worked as a representative to Congresswoman Lois Capps and as an aide in the White House under the Clinton Administration. She is a former member of the Ventura County Workforce Development Board, and she has a long history of involvement with local non-profit and community groups, especially those that focus on education, civic engagement, and the empowerment of women.

Carla has worked on a wide range of issues such as the recently passed California Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act and the California Fair Pay Act.

Ventura County’s 3rd Supervisorial District includes the communities of Camarillo, Port Hueneme, Southeast Oxnard, East Oxnard Plain, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru, East Lockwood Valley, and Eastern Portion of Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme.
