Kamala Is In Way Over Her Head

    T. Becket Adams

For a woman who specialized in badgering political appointees with misleading and ambiguously worded questions when she served in the U.S. Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris sure is a hot mess when it comes to answering even the most straightforward inquiries.

    Some may call this “ironic.”

President Joe Biden’s second in command joined NBC News’s Lester Holt recently to discuss the biggest issues facing the White House, including the chaos at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Amazingly, Harris, who is heading up the federal response to the immigration crisis, was caught flat-footed by a very simple question about whether she plans to visit the border.

Harris refused to say if she, personally, has any plans to go to the border and instead fumbled about with nervous laughter and some odd non sequitur about visiting Europe.

“Do you have any plans to visit the border?” Holt asked during the interview, which is set to air Tuesday evening.

Harris said, “At some point, you know, we are going to the border. We’ve been to the border. So, this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border.”

“You haven’t been to the border,” said Holt.

The vice president responded, “And I haven’t been to Europe. And I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”

I’d like to note at this point that the NBC News transcript of their back-and-forth adds the word “LAUGH” in all caps between the vice president’s “I don’t” and “understand the point.”

“Democratic Congressman [Henry Cuellar of Texas],” Holt continued, “has a border district, has said to you and president, ‘Come. You need — you need to see this.'”

“I care about — listen, I care about what’s happening at the border,” said Harris, adding she’s very busy now exploring the “root causes” of the immigration crisis.

Later, during a joint press conference Tuesday with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a reporter asked Harris why not just go to the border.

“Listen, I’ve been to the border before and I’ll go again,” she said, laughing awkwardly.

Harris was also asked whether she can commit to visiting the border, to which she responded, “Yes, I will.”

She continued, adding she has “spent a lot of time on the border, both going there physically and aware of the issues.”

The Border Patrol recorded an astonishing 101,120 encounters with migrants in February (this figure includes apprehensions plus crossings of migrants at legal ports of entry). The agency later reported 173,348 encounters in March and an additional 178,622 encounters in April.

For reference, the all-time high under President Donald Trump was the 144,116 encounters recorded in May 2019.

But don’t worry: Harris, the person tasked with leading the official White House response to the border crisis, is examining its “root causes.”

Harris as vice president will be one of the great mysteries of the Biden administration. She hails from a safe blue state, she dropped out of the 2020 Democratic primary before even the Iowa caucuses, California went on to lose House seats in the 2020 election even after she was added to the ticket, and she has no clear foreign or domestic policy chops.

Harris brings nothing to the table. She is clearly in over her head. She can’t even fake an answer to an easy and 100% predictable question about the immigration crisis.

Yet, Harris is the number No. 2 person in the White House anyway.

Good luck figuring that one out.
