Land Rover Jaguar of Ventura Donates $12,000 to Help Purchase Ventura Police Department’s Newest K9 – “Rover”

K9headshot-newRecently, on July 19, 2014, the Ventura Police Department (VPD) held its 3rd Annual Bark Out Loud Comedy Night benefiting the VPD’s K9 Unit.  The event raised over $45,000, which included a generous donation of $12,000 from Land Rover Jaguar Ventura to help purchase VPD’s newest K9, aptly named “Rover”.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., Phil Vass President, of Land Rover Jaguar Ventura, will present a $12,000 check to VPD’s Police Chief Ken Corney and the entire K9 Team.

Sergeant Brian Hewlett, supervisor of the K9 Unit said, “Most folks do not realize that our police dogs are purchased through public and private donations, and without support of the public and companies like Land Rover Jaguar Ventura, we wouldn’t have these wonderful animals out on the streets keeping our community safe.”

VPD currently has five K9 Teams. Two members of the team will be retiring in the near future and the department anticipates selecting a new K9 officer in September.  Once the selection process is complete they will then work with the National Police Dog Foundation (NPDF) towards the purchase of their newest K9, Rover.

National Police Dog Foundation (NPDF) and Fundraising Information:

The VPD is fortunate to be involved with the NPDF. The NPDF is a local non-profit organization that seeks donations from the community and uses the money to purchase and train police dogs for law enforcement agencies throughout Ventura County.

All of VPD’s canines (past and present) were purchased by the NPDF and not through taxpayer dollars. On average the cost for a canine is $12,000, with an additional $8,000-$10,000 for training and certification, all of which is paid for through the generosity of the NPDF, our community, and of course organizations like Land Rover Jaguar of Ventura.
