Stein is a frequent speaker at city council and other meetings, acting as an aggressive de facto city fiscal and operational “watchdog.” He is a local accountant for a variety of businesses, knowledgeable in commercial financial practices and rules. He delves into finances far more deeply than more casual speakers, frequently demanding complex and voluminous data, performing analyses and providing strong opinion and recommendations. He has heavily criticized the incumbent Treasurer, who is leaving next week before her term expires at year-end.

He said that there is a lack of trust in the city’s books, promising to restore the public trust. That would require a broader view of the job than the incumbent is taking. He also promises a higher yield on safe investments. He also promises heightened surveillance of and input on expenses,. including insistence upon substantiating them. He would also help stop[ inappropriate transfers between city funds.

Longtime downtown advocate and city whistleblower Martin Jones spoke up for Larry.
