Setting Brushfires of Freedom by Don Jans

    Letter to Ventura City Council

    Hello City Council,

I wanted to bring this issue to your attention as I feel it was overlooked in my previous communications.
City Business License renewal came up on July 1st – I called the Tax License office at City Hall but they said they could only offer a deferral.
That’s where my issue falls currently. Businesses were closed due to State, County & City orders on March 18th 2020. Business Tax license is pre-paid for the whole year. That would be approximately 105 days of business, that businesses paid to do business in the City of Ventura, where many businesses were unable to do business.
So, 105 days of not being able to do business. Yet, we are only offered a deferral… The issue is that I requested a pro-rated amount but I was told “no”. How does that make sense? Was this voted on? Who voted on it if so?
I’d like to know as I feel that was a very poor choice on behalf of businesses in the City of Ventura.
Jonathan Pu’u is a local business owner.

My businesses health department license was due on in April and I paid it even though my shop was required to be closed, because I did not, I would be charged a late fee and I was hoping to open soon. My shop has been closed over 5 months. I have had to pay for licensing my shops and my personal license and bought are back date to April and June and they are meaningless as I am not allowed to reopen. I have no income but still have to pay this city for licensing that I can not use and they will not advocate for us to the governor on our behalf. What am I paying for? Really? For them to sit in their office and threaten people with fines cause they are trying to feed their family’s. This state has become a nightmare.

Sucks to hear about this and more people need to go on record with City Council to voice your opinion on this. If it’s not on the record, it doesn’t help. : (

Municipal employees work off taxpayers money. Why should they care about business owners? They don’t. Pay up and shut up is their mantra.
My gym is closed right now. Logic would say clients of this gym should not be charged for something they cannot use. That is exactly what is happening. But they are not government you see. Not government, a private business

Kind of like asking for a property tax refund because schools were closed. This pandemic is stressing municipal, state and federal budgets, so refund requests would only further hurt your community and country. We need to support each other, and this includes paying taxes so the city, state and federal government has the means to help address this pandemic and the added costs it faces in helping fellow citizens.

Would be good if they didn’t continue to ride this dead donkey up and down the grand canyon without water.

Jonathan is asking his government to be accountable which I, and many others, support.

    Johnathan,

You are all IMHO, due taxes back and a refund on your business licenses.
No fault of your own and placed into “a situation”
when a Small Business Owner. Unorganized leadership and they should support you all!
No one thinks about ordered and then lost inventory expenses too.
    Truly!

Pay you’re damn fee and quit bitching. Everybody has made sacrifices and carries a burden during this historic crisis. For you to think the city should pro rate your permit fees is pathetic. Suck it up buttercup.

People shouldn’t pay for something that was not used. But you are getting the unemployment check still so you don’t mind. plus living at your parents house still makes your response, a fools response. Quiet now and let the adults speak….
