Local Oxnard Resident is Recognized in National Magazine

Walter Fuller, a local Oxnard resident and volunteer at Ormond Beach, has been recognized in Readers Digest Magazine’s yearly profile, ‘Best of America’ cover story featuring exceptional Americans. The story will appear in the July/August issue.

Fuller has served at Ormond Beach as the unofficial, and unpaid security guard, park ranger, custodian and tour guide for 18 years. A lifelong bird lover himself, Fuller first visited Ormond Beach in 1996 on a lunch break while working at Navy Base. He saw mallard ducks, finches, hawks and herons, but didn’t see many people around to enjoy this wonderful nature.

Realizing that the area had been abused as a site for trash and not patrolled, he decided to do something about it. He took action and visited everyday, cleaning the site up and patrolling it at night.

As a result, the beach became a great place to visit and the City of Oxnard recognized him as an official ‘Caregiver’ and provided a trailer for Fuller.

“I’m proud that Ormond Beach now receives up to a hundred visitors a day, and I feel like I made a difference,” noted Fuller.
