Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release
On 06/16/2021, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Lockwood Deputy along with Ventura County Fire Department personnel from Station 16 responded to a subject who was overdue and possibly suffering from heat related medical issues.
At approximately 1220 hours, the Lockwood Valley Substation received a call from a person who was concerned about a coworker who had not shown up for work in several days. The reporting party had been in cellular telephone communication with the subject who stated he was off roading in his pickup truck on the Halfmoon Trail when the truck became stuck. The subject tried for several days to get the truck unstuck but as temperatures soared in the backcountry, the male subject began to experience symptoms related to heat exhaustion. The coworker became
concerned about the subject’s health and contacted authorities.
The Lockwood Deputy and Ventura County Fire Patrol 16 responded to the area, in off-road style Utility Task Vehicles (UTV). The Halfmoon Trail is an Off-Road Vehicle trail in a remote location
in an area south of Halfmoon Campground. The UTV’s are light weight 4×4 vehicles that can get into and out of the rugged area in a timely manner. The UTV’s responded to the area and
located the subject within 45 minutes of the initial call, covering a distance of approximately 20 miles of difficult road conditions. UTV 16 transported the subject back to Halfmoon Campground.
The Ventura County Aviation Unit was contacted to transport the subject from Halfmoon Campground to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation. The Lockwood Valley Substation would like to commend the male subject for remaining calm, staying on the trail and being able to communicate his location. His actions assisted the rescuers in locating him quickly and preventing what could have been an extended and most likely difficult search.
As a reminder, when entering the back country of Ventura County it is important to plan for possible extreme weather conditions that might be experienced. When temperatures rise it is important to protect yourself from exposure by bringing plenty to drink, wearing light clothing and applying sunscreen. Schedule outdoor activities carefully. Pace yourself and use a buddy
system.
