LOS ANGELES — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces September is Coastal Clean Sweep Month. Working together with other agencies, Caltrans is a major sponsor for this important California event.
In addition to the coast, Caltrans has over 12,000 structures and bridges above or alongside inland waterways. Every Caltrans district in the state assists in the cleanup effort to prevent litter flowing from the inland waterways to the ocean. More than 70% of marine litter on our beaches comes from inland sources. Caltrans Maintenance personnel will focus on litter removal under bridges, creeks, riverbeds, and around local waterways.
Over 26 million pounds of trash have been picked up during Coastal Clean Sweeps over the past three decades. In 2020, for Coastal Clean Sweep Day, Caltrans picked up 2,677 cubic yards of litter. That’s enough to fill almost 167 trash trucks.
Working together with the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, Caltrans District 7 is scheduled to perform a Coastal Clean Sweep in Ojai in Ventura County on Friday, September 17 from 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. Maintenance crews will clean along Baldwin Road (State Route 150) near the Ventura River and Burham Road.
