Man attempts to flee Ventura PD after trying to steal money from ATM: Hit by motorist
illness times;”>On Friday morning, medicine 1-23-15, at approximately 7:35am, a citizen reported a suspicious subject entering several invalid number codes into an ATM at the Chase Bank in the 2400 block of Harbor Blvd. A Ventura police officer contacted the suspicious subject, who was identified as 29 year old Armando Gabriel Mendoza, a Ventura resident. The VPD officer confirmed that Mendoza was attempting to withdraw money from the ATM using an invalid bank card normally sent out as an advertisement from a bank.
During contact with Mendoza, the VPD officer attempted to conduct a probation search. Mendoza resisted the officer’s efforts to search him and fled on foot. The VPD officer caught up with Mendoza after a brief pursuit. However, Mendoza was again able to break free from the officer and continued to flee. Mendoza fled out of the parking lot and into the traffic lanes on Harbor Blvd where he was struck by a vehicle driving east on Harbor Blvd. Mendoza was thrown approximately 25-30 feet as a result of the collision, but managed to get back up onto his feet and continued to flee from the officer. After another brief foot pursuit, the officer was able to again catch up to Mendoza and apprehend him.
Mendoza sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to VCMC where he was admitted for treatment. Mendoza was cited and released at the hospital for resisting arrest and possession of narcotics. The motorist that was driving the vehicle that collided with Mendoza was not injured. No VPD officers were injured as a result of this incident.
