Man Shot by Ventura PD Arrested

Ventura Police Department – Incident Press Release

The man shot by a Ventura Police Officer on 04/01/19, Christopher Hays, has been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon upon a police officer.

On 04/01/19, Christopher Hays made several telephones calls to the Ventura Police Department that included threats to members of the police department and local schools.  As a result, Ventura Police Sergeant Sam Harbert made contact with Hays in the parking lot of the Ventura County Government Center. Hays verbally threatened Sergeant Harbert and then physically assaulted him.  During the assault, Hays gained control of Sergeant Harbert’s baton and used it to strike Sergeant Harbert’s arm and head. Sergeant Harbert then fired two shots that struck Hays in the abdomen and ended the attack.

Hays was transported to a local hospital where he remained until 05/30/19. Upon Hays’ release from the hospital, he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon upon a police officer. Hays was booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility on $250,000.00 bail. Hays is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on 06/03/19.
