Marine Biologist and Naturalist Holly Lohuis to Speak at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum Speaker Series on February 19th

Oxnard, CA: The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is proud to welcome Marine Biologist and Naturalist Holly Lohuis to its 2020 Speaker Series on Wednesday, February 19th, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. She will be speaking on “Embracing Change Through Ocean Exploration: Complexities of Ocean Environments and the Inspiration for a Sustainable Future of Our Oceans.”

The biological diversity of marine habitats is threatened by the activities of one species: humans. Holly Lohuis will highlight the many lessons the ocean can teach us on how we all can take part in the global solution of creating a sustainable future. “Jacques Cousteau used to always say people only protect what they love. It’s my job to give people that sense of understanding so they have their own emotional connection to the ocean,” says Lohuis. Admission to the Speaker Series is free for CIMM members, $7.00 for non-members, $5.00 for seniors (65+), and is free for children under 12.

About Holly Lohuis: Throughout Holly Lohuis’ 29-year career as a marine biologist and naturalist, she has worked for a variety of organizations, including over 23 years with Jean-Michel Cousteau and his Oceans Futures Society in Santa Barbara, CA. And, more recently, with Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s “Ocean Connections and Marine Science” as an Islands Packers naturalist to the Channel Islands National Park, and the Ritz-Carlton Bacara’s Jean-Michel Ambassadors of the Environment program.

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is located in Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor at 3900 Bluefin Circle. Hours: Open Mon/Th-Sat 10-4 pm, Sun 12-4 pm and closed Tues/Wed for group tours and private member events. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Museum entry is free for members and children under 6, $7 adults, $5 seniors 65+/military, $3 children (ages 6-17), and free on the third Thursday of the month, sponsored by Southern California Edison.

Explore galleries full of rare and beautiful maritime paintings dating back to the 1600’s, more than seventy world-class models of historic ships, rotating thematic fine arts exhibitions, and interactive exhibits that encourage visitors to expand their horizons about everything maritime.
