Metrolink Offers Alternative to Weekend Inland Empire Freeway Closures

LOS ANGELES – Road-weary commuters have even more reason to feel run-down as construction has begun on multiple projects on the 60 freeway between Ontario and Riverside and Metrolink and Caltrans encourage travelers to use commuter rail to avoid construction delays and take advantage of the affordable $10 weekend day pass.

The projects will take as long as three years to complete with construction requiring some lane closers during nighttime hours. For the next 14 weekends, excluding Labor Day weekend, all lanes on the 60 freeway will be closed between Euclid Avenue in Ontario and Interstate 215 in Riverside from Friday at 10 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m.

Drivers may encounter teeth-grinding gridlock and detours for the duration of the work.

“For travelers impacted by the road work, Metrolink offers a stress-free and dependable alternative to driving alone in a vehicle and the $10 weekend day pass makes traveling even more economical,” said Metrolink CEO Stephanie Wiggins. “This extended period of freeway work is the perfect opportunity to try safe and efficient commuter rail.”

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is encouraging commuters to explore options that can get them to their destinations without being delayed by construction work.

“While these major highway improvement projects are underway, it’s a good idea to consider other mobility options and Metrolink serves the Inland Empire (IE) with multiple lines with late-night service that can keep the region moving,” said Caltrans District 8 Director Michael Beauchamp.

Travelers going between Los Angeles and the IE can take the San Bernardino or 91/Perris Valley lines, while those going to and from Orange County or as far south as Oceanside can take the IEOC line.

For IE commuters who want to eliminate Monday through Friday gridlocked traffic, Metrolink offers daily round trip trains connecting San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange County and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.
