The Mighty Cash Cat’s latest album “The Ballad of Johnny & June” is garnering great reviews worldwide. AXS.com writes, “The Ballad of Johnny and June offers a noteworthy blend of standard studio-polished versions of live staples, songs rarely a part of their standard stage repertoire, and some long-awaited original material that was definitely worth the wait.” Simi Valley Acorn writer Cary Ginell recently wrote, “Led by Michael J. Smith, the Mighty Cash Cats pay tribute to country music legend Johnny Cash but do so in a reverential way. His intentions are noble”. ROOTSTIME Magazine in Europe writes, “The Mighty Cash Cats” is an excellent American band built around the duo Michael J. Smith (vocals /guitar) and Leticia Blumette (vocals/bass), helped by Thin Oliver (guitar), and Larry Anderson (drums). The Ballad of Johnny & June is not only a tribute to the most exciting music couple ever, Johnny Cash and June Carter, but also a tribute to Sun Records, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Tennessee Three, which have meant so much to Country Music and Rock n Roll lovers. You need get The Mighty Cash Cats’ new CD and listen to it more than once.” The Ventura County Star says, “the title track off the Mighty Cash Cat’s new CD neatly sums up the history and onstage magic of johnny Cash and his wife/performing partner, June Carter Cash.”

The Ballad of Johnny & June – culled from band namesake Johnny Cash and June Carter – utilizes the sparse instrumentation of Sun Records, but with updated vocal, guitar, bass, and drum sounds. Jimmy Calire, keyboardist for iconic group America, makes a guest appearance on the album. The Ballad of Johnny & June combines the Mighty Cash Cat’s signature Americana sound with country music, rockabilly, rock n roll, and the blues. The duet title track, written by front person Michael J Smith, “pays homage to Johnny and June, Sam Phillips and Sun Records, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Carter Family, and Cash’s band, The Tennessee Three,” states Smith, whose co-front-person in the band is Leticia Blumette (lead-background vocals/bass). Michael and Leticia sing several duets on the album, including “Long-Legged Guitar Pickin’ Man”, the Tim Hardin classic, “If I Were A Carpenter”, and Bob Dylan’s folk ode, “It Ain’t Me Babe”. Oliver Thin (guitars, backing vocals) and Larry Anderson (drums) round out the band.
