Moorpark College Instrumental Music Scholarship In Honor Of Rohith Gopal (Applications and Contributions Now Being Accepted)

As many of you know, the president of Moorpark College, Luis Sanchez, kick-started a yearly instrumental music scholarship in honor of Rohith Gopal, our extremely talented Moorpark College Jazz A Band pianist who tragically lost his life in a car accident on March 21, 2015. He was a brilliant student who participated in the Moorpark College Jazz Ensembles for two years, one year as a senior in high school and the following year as a college music student. Each year one instrumental music student at Moorpark College will be awarded this scholarship which will help cover the costs of tuition and books for two years. Here are the criteria:

      –  The student must have enrolled in and participated in a Moorpark College instrumental ensemble (Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra) as a high school student (as Rohith did).
      –  The student must pursue an Associate’s Degree in Applied Music at Moorpark College upon graduating high school.

Students who are interested in applying for the scholarship for the 2017-2018 need to download the scholarship application at, complete it, and submit it with all of the supporting documentation to the Scholarship Office at Moorpark College. The due date for all scholarship applications is August 6th, 2018. We will be announcing the award winner at the beginning of the fall semester, so make sure you submit the application as soon as possible.

Unfortunately Moorpark College does not have the resources to fund the scholarship ourselves, so we rely on tax deductible donations from the community to keep it moving forward. If this seems like a worthy cause that you would consider helping us fund, you can contribute by writing a check payable to the “Moorpark College Foundation” and mailing it to Moorpark College Foundation, 7075 Campus Rd., Moorpark, CA 93021. Please indicate in the notes section of the check that it is meant for the scholarship in honor of Rohith Gopal. If you have a minute, please read this thoughtful article written by Barry Goldberg encouraging his fellow lawyers to donate to Rohith’s scholarship, and describing the role that the Moorpark College Jazz Ensembles played in helping him regain his passion for music after 30 years: Thank you so much and please share this with anyone you think might be willing to help honor Rohith’s memory.
