Moorpark Ralphs gets a needed sprucing up
By Debra Tash
The Ralphs in Moorpark had seen better days. It was the first supermarket in what was barely a suburb over 30 years ago. The Peach Hill subdivision was being built out but there was nowhere to shop in the growing hamlet, except for a small ma and pa store. Then Hughes supermarket opened in the Moorpark Town Center on Los Angeles Ave. It was right next to Thrifty’s Drug Store, which boosted the best hand scooped ice cream in town, because it was the only place you could get it.
Hughes was eventually bought out by Ralphs and Ralphs was eventually purchased by grocery giant, Kroger.
Last year it looked like Ralphs would succumb to the plight of many of Moorpark’s retailers. They would close. But the city stepped in to help re-negotiate their lease, prior CJ article.
The supermarket held a Grand Opening today. Tom Williams, the store manager, told CJ: Kroger spent over one million to renovate the aging market which hadn’t been redone since 2000. The store wasn’t closed one day during the remodel. All the construction was done after hours. The colors are reminiscent of Whole Foods, with sages, brown accents and deep burnt oranges. There is a section that sells bulk foods, new coolers and lovely gray toned flooring replacing the old worn linoleum. They even personalized signs up on the walls to the area, noting the College and its Teaching Zoo. And Moorpark has one more Starbucks, making a total of four of them in the city…unless I’ve lost count
If you’d like to check it out there’s a two day special you can take advantage of. So why not come on by?
