Moorpark resident arrested for attempted murder after attack

Moorpark deputies arrested a man for attempted murder Tuesday morning after he viciously attacked and raped a woman inside her apartment on Charles Street. Neighbors called 911 when they heard screaming and saw a naked man in the courtyard of the apartment complex. Deputies contacted 49-year-old Edward Ayans and arrested him after finding the 76-year-old victim inside her home with significant injuries. Ayans was in an extremely agitated state due to being under the influence of methamphetamine.

Sheriff’s investigators worked throughout the day collecting evidence at the scene. They learned that Ayans knew the victim and had raped her and severely beaten her. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she is in critical, but stable condition. Ayans was booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura for attempted murder, rape, mayhem and elder abuse. His bail has been set at $1.1 million. Ayans is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history spanning three decades. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 17, 2021.
