The Navy has begun an Environmental Assessment (EA) associated with the west coast home basing of the MQ-25A Stingray Unmanned Aircraft System (Stingray UAS) at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Point Mugu, California.
The Stingray UAS system will deliver a robust refueling capability to make better use of the Navy’s combat strike fighters and extend their range. The system will be a critical part of the future carrier air wing (CVW) and will enhance carrier capability and versatility through the integration of a persistent, sea-based aerial refueling Unmanned Aircraft System into the CVW.
The Navy’s proposed action calls for basing 20 Stingray UAS at NBVC Point Mugu. The proposed action also includes performance of all necessary maintenance on the Stingray and establishment of training centers for Stingray operators and maintainers. The Navy plans to conduct approximately 960 takeoffs/landings annually. The proposed action calls for construction, demolition and renovation of facilities and infrastructure at NBVC Point Mugu. The basing of the Stingray is expected to add about 730 personnel (plus family members) at the installation to support the Stingray program.
The Navy plans to release a Draft Environmental Assessment in the fall of this year. The document will be available for public review for 30 days. They Navy will use the public comments in preparation of the Final EA, which is expected to be completed and published in spring of 2021.
