NAWBO Ventura County hosts Will the Real Independent Contractor Please Stand Up?

Ventura County, CA The Ventura County chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO VC) announces a new venue, new time and extremely timely topic for its September meeting. Get your tickets at NAWBOVC.org for “Will the Real Independent Contractor Please Stand Up?” being held on Tuesday, September 10th, 12pm–2pm, at the newly remodeled Palm Garden Hotel in Thousand Oaks. Lunch will be served.

Join business owners from throughout the county as 30+ year human resources expert Vikita Poindexter of Poindexter Consulting Group addresses the challenging question facing employers in California, “Do I have employees or independent contractors?” During this luncheon Poindexter will discuss the landmark 2018 California Supreme Court decision in the matter of Dynamex Operations West, Inc., which applies a standard that presumes all workers are employees instead of contractors. In April 2019, California adopted an employment-classification test, which places the burden on employers to demonstrate that every worker is not an employee. The Dynamex Decision, as it has become known, has created concern and challenges for small business owners who have many questions.

“Our membership is comprised of women business owners from varied industries both service-based and product-driven. The continually evolving and highly important subject of employees versus independent contractors impacts all California- based employers,” stated Lynnette Coverly, President, NAWBO Ventura County. “I couldn’t be more pleased to welcome acknowledged employment expert Vikita Poindexter to Ventura County.” Poindexter’s extensive knowledge of human resources issues includes budget preparation, cost analysis, EEOC compliance, recruiting, Department of Labor and Standards, Department of Fair Housing, benefit administration, litigation prevention, personnel management, arbitration and contract negotiations for multimillion-dollar companies in industries including finance, construction and real estate, entertainment, hospitality, and more.

NAWBO Ventura County hosts educational meetings monthly on timely topics vital to the growth and success of women business owners, including female non-profit founders and executives. Breakfast, lunch and/or dinner meetings are typically held the second Tuesday of each month at various locations in Ventura County.
