New Hueneme City Council – new hope- City Council Meeting 12/5/16
By Tom Dunn
Changing of the guard- new Mayor Tom Figg an Mayor Pro Tem Jim Hensley at 12-15-16 Port Hueneme City Council meeting.
The Council voted for Council Member Tom Figg to be Mayor for the next year and Council Member Jim Hensley to be Mayor Pro Tem. Tom Figg has been involved with many aspects of the city as an employee, consultant and city council member. He has a wealth of knowledge about the past and current status of Port Hueneme from his 22 years of working with the city.
With the new City Manager, Rod Butler, and Will Berg, Mayor Figg hopefully will be able to lead the council in finding ways to turn around the financial problems and morale at city hall. The city also needs some forward thinking department managers and input from Port Hueneme citizens to be able to keep Port Hueneme “the friendly city by the sea”.
There were about 50 people at the council meeting, much better than the normal 10-20 attendees. More Citizens showing up and expressing their opinions during open discussion will send the message to the city council that you care what they do. They will know you are watching them to make sure they fulfill their oath of office to serve all Citizens of Port Hueneme, not just a few or their own special interest.
Also, Steven Gama made a request that the City Council use the inspirational part of the agenda to recognize and/or honor Port Hueneme outstanding citizens that contribute and give above and beyond hard work, ideas and heroic actions, that all of us should try to do as much as we can. I suggest this section of the city council agenda be called ”Port Hueneme Pride”.
Here is a video interview with newly-elected Councilman Will Berg, on “Hello Port Hueneme,” giving you some insight as to who he is, what he is involved with in Port Hueneme and some ideas to lead the city to financial prosperity:
