Ojai Studio Artists present April “Second Saturday” Mini-Tour

The Ojai Studio Artists Second Saturday mini-tours continue this month with eight artists exhibiting on Saturday, April 9. Featured this month are Brian Berman, Jeffrey Crussell, Ted Gall, Pamela Grau, Karen K. Lewis, Patty McFall, Linda Taylor and Soni Wright. Studios will be open from 10am – 3pm.  Admission is free and all studios are located within a few miles of each other.

Sculpting since 1991, Brian Berman works in cast glass, metals, and stone with themes of inner and outer peace. He was selected for an exhibit in the Louvre, Paris in 2008 and has sculptures  in private and corporate collections throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe.

Jeffrey Crussell’s work has always been influenced by his architectural background. Working predominantly in three dimensions with repurposed and found materials, Crussell incorporates painting, drawing, video, photography and sculpture in his mixed media pieces.

Ted Gall sculpts in wax, primarily focusing on the human form. He then casts his work in bronze, aluminum or stainless steel. With large commissions and installations across the country, Gall also sculpts smaller articulated figures, comprised of many intricate assembled pieces, some with movies running inside their heads.

Pamela Grau’s large wall pieces have intricate surfaces, layered with pigment and metallic compounds. After being treated for cancer in 2009,  Grau’s work took a huge turn. Her current work is about spirit contained within design, color and texture. She uses tiny clay balls, rolled-up socks dipped in pigment and other unusual materials to create vibrant, textural paintings. Two of her most recent commissions can be seen in the Ojai Valley Inn lobby and restaurant.

Karen K. Lewis’ vibrant paintings include still lifes, chairs in studio settings and  large groups of people. She also does plein air painting and as a printmaker, has explored solarplate etching and monoprinting. Lewis earned a BA in Art at UCLA, and received her MFA from Herbert Lehman College in New York, exhibiting in SOHO before moving to Ojai.

Patty McFall is a figurative sculptor, working primarily in water and oil based clay and also casts her work in bronze. She finds her inspiration in the grace and movement of the human body. With a strong commitment to animal rights, McFall recently has begun sculpting endangered animals.

Linda Taylor works in a variety of printmaking media including woodcuts, stone lithography, monotypes, collagraphs and etchings. She has an MFA in printmaking from University of California at Santa Barbara. She will be exhibiting her work at Karen Lewis’ studio.

Soni Wright’s tactile, non-representational paintings are often enhanced by found objects and stabilized with cement and shellac. Working mainly in a square format, her goal is to achieve a sensual creation with the appearance, as well as the reality, of opposing textures.
