Oxnard: another Post Release Offender arrested

Close to 4am this morning, officers responded to the 1600 Block of North “C” Street regarding residents calling for a subject ringing doorbells to homes and refusing to leave. Other earlier calls had been received regarding a suspicious subject casing for burglary in the same area.

Officers located Reyes Cardona, a 32-year old Oxnard resident, at the front door of a residence near Carriage Square and “C” Street. Cardona was wearing all black clothing, was carrying two flashlights, and had a screwdriver in his possession. He is a post release offender (PRO) and was arrested for a PRO “flash incarceration” (period of detention in county jail  due to a violation of an offender’s conditions of post release supervision. The length of the detention period can range between one and ten consecutive days).

Cardona is currently in the Post Release Offender Program, created by Assembly Bill 109 – the 2011 Public Safety Realignment – which was effective October 1, 2011.  This program mandates that individuals sentenced to non-violent, non-serious (irrespective of priors) or non-sex offenses will serve their sentences in county jails instead of state prison.  The public should be aware that release under AB 109 is based on the offender’s most recent committing offense. Prior convictions arenot considered.

The Oxnard Police Department continues to encourage residents to be partners in public safety as part of the Operation Safer and Stronger initiative. Persons with information regarding this incident may contact the Oxnard Police Department at 385-7600, or the Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (805) 222-8477 and http://www.venturacountycrimestoppers.org/contactus.aspx.
