The formerly moribund Oxnard CERT (Civilian Emergency Response Team) was revived on the initiative of Fire Dept Chief Williams. Last year he recruited Oxnard Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Susan Duenas, who has reactivated the program and instituted a training regimen.  Mayor Flynn presented  a proclamation hailing the program and celebrating the graduates at last night’s City Council meeting. He warned that the total core of active, trained members is still way too small for a city of 200,000 people and exhorted Citizens to get involved in the program. Read event REPORT.

Community Emergency Response Team

CERT

Oxnard residents depend on the Fire Department to respond to emergencies OxnardFDin four minutes or less after calling 911. However, if you call 911 immediately after a disaster, it could take hours or days to get help. To help residents prepare for this, the Oxnard Fire Department offers FREE training taught by Oxnard Firefighters that teaches you how to be self sufficient during a disaster. For six weeks, one night a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., students receive classroom and hands on training. The final class provides participants with an opportunity to participate in a full scale disaster exercise. No special skills are needed.
