In a yurt on the snow-covered fields of the North, Nanook and Sedna live following the traditions of their ancestors. Alone in the wilderness, they look like the last people on Earth. Nanook and Sedna’s traditional way of life starts changing – slowly, but inevitably. Hunting becomes more and more difficult, the animals around them die from inexplicable causes, and the ice has been melting earlier every year. Chena, who visits them regularly, is their only connection to the outside world – and to their daughter Ága, who left the icy tundra long ago due to a family feud. When Sedna’s health deteriorates, Nanook decides to fulfil her wish. He embarks on a long journey in order to find Ága.

    November 4 – FOR SAMA
    2019 UK/Syria 1hr 34min
    Documentary NR
    In Arabic with English Subtitles
FOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
“One of the most intimate and stirring documentaries about war in the 21st century, and a plea to the free nations of the world to act.”
“What a talent Waad is. “For Sama” is a film made with the instincts of a journalist, the passion of a revolutionary and the beating heart of a mother.”

Somewhere in Kurdistan. Bahar is commander in chief of the Girls of the Sun, a Kurdish female battalion. She is about to take back the town of Corduene, where she was captured by the extremists. Mathilde, a French journalist covers the first three days of the offensive. Through their encounter, Bahar’s itinerary, since the men dressed in black changed the course of her existence, resurfaces.
“Girls of the Sun” has an air of authenticity and grit that’s convincing, and Farahani, an Iranian-born actress, makes us care.” – G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
