City Manager Greg Nyhoff informed us today they they hired Bryan Bryce as the new Fire Chief. Police Chief Jeri Williams has been overseeing the department since the BriceBryandeparture of Chief Williams (no relation) and gives full credit to the department management for successful operations during that time. Brice is now Division Chief for the Orange County Fire Authority, over five Orange County cities, plus California Task Force 5 of FEMA’s national Urban Search and Rescue teams. He will start with Oxnard on 12-7-15.

He brings strategic planning, community outreach/engagement, organizational development and general municipal administration, with  experience in paramedic, hazardous materials, urban search and rescue, and wildland urban interface.

Mr. Bryce will have  a tough assignment, as the Department has gone through difficult times, including abrupt departure of the previous Chief and a cap on new hires and a drastic cut in the overtime being used to help fill in for personnel shortages, due to the city’s financial crisis. The department has a significantly lower ration of firefighters to city population than the state average.

Editor’s note: Shortly after we learned of Mr. Bryce’s impending arrival, the Oxnard Firefighters’ (union) representative informed us that Mr. Bryce has recent disciplinary action in the form of a warning letter . They further objected to the fact that they were not included at all in the interviewing.vetting process. The warning was for accepting meals costing in excess of $50 from Emergency Services Consulting International (ESCI)- $6 over the limit -WOW!  It also mentions that he failed to report income from ESCI on a disclosure statement. The letter says a mitigating factor was that he had not received training on these practices.
