Oxnard Man Arrested for Fatal Accident by Port Hueneme Police – Suspect in Vehicular Manslaughter

On October 17th, 2018 at approximately 9:57 PM, the Port Hueneme Police Department and emergency services personnel responded to a major injury traffic collision near the cross-over bridge entrance to Mandalay Village Marketplace, located in the 600 Block of West Channel Islands Blvd.  When officers arrived they located two vehicles, a Chevy Malibu and a Hyundai Accent.

After an initial investigation, officers determined that the Chevy, which was occupied by four people, had been traveling westbound on Channel Islands at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light and collided with the Hyundai, which was traveling eastbound on Channel Islands and in the process of making a left-hand turn into the shopping center.  

The male driver and a female passenger in the Hyundai were both transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries.  The female later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The four occupants of the Chevy were treated at the scene for minor injuries.  The driver of the Chevy, 24-year-old Jose Garcia Rodriguez of Oxnard was arrested at the scene.

Rodriguez was later transported to the Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on the following charge(s):

California Penal Code Section 191.5 – Felony Gross Vehicular Manslaughter.

California Vehicle Code Section 23153(a) – Felony Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury.

California Vehicle Code Section 12500 (a) – Driving without a License.
