Cody Washington (DOB 2/13/77), of Oxnard, was charged with the unlawful killing of Corey Smith, also of Oxnard, which occurred on October 24, 2020. The complaint charges one count of voluntary manslaughter with a special allegation that Mr. Washington used a knife during the commission of the crime.
On October 24, 2020, at approximately 10:37 a.m., Oxnard Police Department officers were dispatched to the JK Smoke Shop, located at 3716 Saviers Road in the City of Oxnard. Upon arrival, officers found Mr. Smith, who was unconscious and bleeding profusely from what appeared to be a single stab wound to his chest. Mr. Smith was immediately taken to the Ventura County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Washington appeared in court for arraignment and pled not guilty to the charges. The case is set for an early disposition conference on November 5, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. in Courtroom 12 of the Ventura Superior Court and for preliminary hearing on November 9, 2020, at 8:15 a.m. in Courtroom 14. Washington is currently in custody at the Ventura County jail with bail set at $115,000.
